EDIT/UPDATE 06182021 - this guy has been identified and documented here: https://cumberland.crimewatchpa.com/lowerallentwppd/41647/warrants/arredondo-brian-18-3922-a1-theft-deception-and-2-additional-charges
Hey Portland / other PNW Bike Shops,
The guy shown in the photos at the bottom of this article has stolen from MANY shops in PDX via credit card fraud - same methodology in each one to get employees to manually enter a CC number that later comes back as fraudulent/stolen.
These 3 stolen bikes are from December 2020, but we assume he's still around or had hit other shops.
Edit: According to this tweet they may have hit up to 10 shops https://twitter.com/BikePortland/status/1349203364874055682
Description: "man about 5'10" between 160-190 lbs, he was wearing a heavy insulated coat, cap and mask but I'd guess he was between 40 and 45 years old, fair skinned and lightish hair. I joked after he left that he reminded me of a Russian mafia guy - clean cut but the fashion was very Eastern European. …… He definitely came looking for that bike too, as if he'd had the recommendation and done his research and was just ready to buy. So he had a good story that all made sense. But, here's where I went wrong… he had a wallet app on his phone and tried to use the hands-free system to make the purchase but it did not work. The message I got from the machine was about a communication error so I keyed the payment into the machine."
lastly - "He’s pleasant but slightly reserved in demeanor."
Details provided at sale, all assumed fraudulent:
Name: David Ward
License: "CA drivers license that matches the name on the card (or so it appeared in his app) and the photo on that license looked like him"
Phone #: 512 271 7245
Address: 877 Kagawa St, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272
Bike Index notes the above may possibly be the credit card victim's info and should not be distributed widely. It is only provided here so you can check to see if this person's name and number and details are in your records.
Multiple bikes he has stolen so far:
Stolen 2020 Tern Vektron S10 gen 2 Serial: AA91156441
Stolen 2016 Liv Avail Advanced 2 Serial: GH5F219
Stolen Trek Emonda SL 6 Serial#: WTU245XD0165N
Stolen 2021 Kona Honzo Serial#: AK00500871
If this guy bought bikes from you in December 2020 or Jan 2021 then they're probably about to come back as disputed charges.
If you see this guy, call PPB and reference case: 2021-900128 and FFS don't sell him anything, and then email me bryan@bikeindex.org
