Recovered and returned

Every bike above came home because the registry was free

Bike Index is a nonprofit. Registration, search, and theft reports cost nothing. Donations are what keep it that way. Bike Index is a nonprofit. Registration costs nothing, searching costs nothing, and reporting a theft costs nothing — which is why a million bikes are in the registry and why police departments and shops actually use it. Donations are what keep it that way.

Major giving

Larger gifts move whole cities onto the registry

Gifts at this level go toward partner onboarding, cross-border theft investigations, and the engineering behind promoted alerts.

Other ways to give at this level

  • Donor-advised fund grants — we can send our EIN and grant details.
  • Gifts of stock or crypto, which avoid capital gains on appreciated assets.

Where the money goes

Registration stays free

Servers, support, and the search tools that shops and police use at no charge. No paywall, no tiers, no selling rider data.

Alerts that reach people

The stolen bike alert system and the promoted alerts that push a listing into feeds around the theft.

Partners and investigations

Onboarding new shops, departments, and cities, and the long-running theft-ring investigations that come out of the registry data.

Features for bike owners

The marketplace, where a listing starts from a bike already in the registry — built to make selling a stolen bike harder. More owner tools are on the way.

In their owners' words

Every recovery is reported by the person who got their bike back.

Filed a police report, made a ton of facebook posts, registered the bike here. Apparently someone who saw a post, saw someone riding my bike Friday night and called the police. the police followed the man to his house where there were multiple bikes being stored and upon checking the serial number, confirmed the bike was stolen and belonged to me. Its been sitting in evidence since Saturday.

A million bikes are registered. Not one owner paid to be there.

Keep it free for the next million.
