I went into a restaurant to order food. I was 10 feet from my bike and could see it while in the restaurant so I didn't bother to lock it which of course was a mistake. I noticed a man looking at it but he was pushing a shopping cart. He did not touch it at that time and he then moved on. I've had the bike for 28 years and no one had ever approached it like that. I looked up about 30 seconds later and it was gone. I ran north to NE 130th street and I think I saw him riding my bike across Lake City Way. The light was red and I
couldn't get across the street. I purchased this Specialized Hardrock Mountain Bike (Red) at R & E Cycles in 1987 and had it refurbished there about 4 or 5 years ago. The bike looks brand new and it has a black rack on the back but no fenders. My lock which I didn't use was a combination lock with a chain which had a red plastic cover around it. It was rapped around the bar that holds the seat. I have requested a serial number from R & E but I haven't heard back from them. I want to thank the lady who called the police and gave a very detailed description of the person who stole my bike. She did this immediately and even told the person that it wasn't his bike. I also want to thank the man I encountered on NE 145th street. When he stopped his bike to talk to me he fell over onto NE 145th Street. Fortunately he didn't hurt himself. He gave me a lot of good information. I have been contacted by R & E Cycles and was told that they have no information about my bike. My thinking was that if you purchase a bike and then bring it in many times over a 24 year period there would be records. They didn't start recording that information until 1994 and when you bring a bike in for repair they don't record serial numbers. I thought the process was like taking a dog or cat to the Veterinarian. During the life time of the pet there is a record of all visits. I had to put my cat down three weeks ago. At R & E Cycles I purchased a $550 bicycle and brought it in for repairs over the years and even had it refurbished in the fall of 2009. I brought it in again in about 2013 and had new tires placed on the bike and they have no record of me or my bike. I find this very odd. Live and learn.
