I cycle from home to work and back nearly every day and have for many years. I am a lawyer and work as Senior Legal Counsel for Total Energy Services Inc., My downtown office is in Life Plaza, 734 7 Ave SW. I have cycled to and from this building since February 2024.
I cycled to work this morning and arrived at approximately 8:03 AM. I used my keycard to access the locked parkade and then mounted and locked my bike to the wall on Parking Level 2. At the end of my workday, at approximately 5:35 PM, I took the stairs from the lobby to the parkade and saw that my bike was missing and my helmet / jacket / gloves / glasses were in a pile on the ground. The lock was still attached to the bike mount.
I immediately went upstairs and reported the missing bike to security at reception in the lobby. We promptly began reviewing security camera footage and discovered that at approximately 1:25 PM a suspicious individual was clearly visible lurking near the parkade entrance. He left when a security guard on patrol checked the parkade entrance. However, the cameras showed that the individual entered the parkade behind a car with access at approximately 1:29 PM. His face was not directly visible on any of the footage, but for the next 20 minutes he proceeded to remove my bike from the lock and wall mount. He was holding / wearing a large bag with a somewhat awkward shape that appeared to contain tools, but this is speculation on my part and I have not closely watched the security camera footage as I was also making my police report (over multiple calls) while security was reviewing the camera footage. The security camera footage showed the individual leaving the parkade riding my bike at approximately 1:49 PM, 20 minutes after he entered. He turned down the alley between 7 Ave and 6 Ave SW, heading east.
The individual who stole my bike appeared to be a white male. He was wearing jeans, a baseball cap, and what appeared to be both a hoodie and a jacket. He wore dark shoes. I've attached a few photos that I took of the security camera footage, as well as the bike mount area with my items on the ground and my lock intact in the mount.
I have a good relationship with the security team in my building and have had conversations with them about parkade security. They have showed me the monitors in the 18th floor control room where cameras are continuously recording and are typically monitored by either 1 or 2 security guards in the control room, in addition to a security guard in reception who also monitors the various security cameras visible on their monitors. There are multiple cameras recording both the parkade entrance as well as the inside of the parkade. There should have been at least 2 security guards watching the footage, in addition to the guard on patrol.
I first called the police to report the theft at approximately 5:45 PM. I was told to fill out a report online but I wasn't able to, so I called back and provided a report over the phone.
I was advised by security that they were working to create smaller video files of the theft. I left to go home at approximately 6:30 PM.
