- Description of incident

Bike was locked near tree. Probably stolen between hours of 3 and 4 PM in front of 500 East 85th Street building, The Cambridge. I work at an office at street level of the building. I asked the building management to let me see surveillance footage from their surveillance cameras. I was told that I have to have the police send them a police report asking to see the surveillance video which would be destroyed in approximately 30 days from when it was taped. Without a police request the management would not allow me to see the video. I went back to the 19th Precinct where I originally filed the stolen-bike report and asked the police to submit a request to the building management to let me see the surveillance footage. Police told me that since the bike's value was under a certain amount of money, they will not investigate further and will not ask the building management to allow me to see the surveillance footage. The police said that it takes too much money and manpower to investigate what the NY Police Department considers petty theft.
