Gears are all in the back. Brakes and gears are on the opposite side of the handlebars as is the custom in the USA since I bought it in New Zealand. Thiefs left the seat behind. The bike was locked when it was stolen, but had an additional U-lock around the front post which may still be attached to the bike. Sticker ID CU4464
